Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3 is a crucial time in the education of our pupils; a successful transition from Key Stage 2 is essential to enable students to build on and extend their knowledge and develop new skills across a wider range of subjects. This three year period enables students to build the foundations needed for success at Key Stages 4 and 5 in public examinations.

The Key Stage 3 curriculum at Rickmansworth is broad, balanced, challenging and supportive, enabling all students to achieve their potential. The tables below summarise the curriculum at Key Stage 3.

We teach a two week timetable with 25 x 1 hour lessons each week

Year 7

  •     Maths, English and Science:  7 lessons of each

  •      A Modern Foreign Language (either French or German): 6 lessons

  •     Geography and History: 3 lessons of each

  •     Games: 5 lessons

  •     Art, Computing, Music, Religious Studies: 2 lesson of each

  •     Drama, Dance, Food Technology and Technology: 1 lesson of each

Year 8 and Year 9

In Years 8 and 9 the curriculum is very similar but the balance of some subjects does change and all students have the opportunity to study both French and German.

All students are expected to work consistently hard and are set challenging targets for the end of each academic year based on their prior attainment. Progress toward these targets is monitored on a termly basis and parents receive an Assessment Tracker report at the end of each term, showing their son or daughter’s target level and predicted end of year level along with assessment against the Ricky Rs: Resilience, Reflectiveness, Respect, Resourcefulness, Responsibility and Relationships. Parents also have the opportunity to discuss their son or daughter’s academic progress in a consultation evening with all subject teachers and will receive a formal written report annually.
