Department vision:

‘To motivate, engage and inspire all students. We allow students to realise their potential and enable outstanding progress to be made across all science subjects. We want students to become true scientists and view the world around with wonder and understanding’

The Science Department is housed in fourteen purpose-built modern laboratories and consists of 15 teachers and 4 technicians.

As a subject studied by all students throughout Years 7 to 11, Science retains a certain status as an important subject and the quality of teaching and learning taking place is reflective of that

Key Stage 3

Students are in their Teaching Groups in Year 7 to 9 and study the three sciences, often taught by one or two of our specialist teachers. We follow our own Rickmansworth School Science Scheme of Work which incorporates the National Curriculum for Science.

Throughout their time they will develop the practical and analytical skills of a scientist ensuring they have every opportunity to succeed in their GCSE and in a science career.

Key Stage 4

The majority of students study AQA Combined Science. The course covers all three of the sciences and remains an excellent stepping stone towards A Level sciences.

Those students who choose Triple Science, consisting of a GCSE in each of AQA Biology, AQA Chemistry and AQA Physics, study the same content as Combined Science and also an additional module in each of the three sciences.

Key Stage 5

Please see the specific subject areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics for further details.

Extra-Curricular & Trips

Science Club is a popular option for students in Year 7 to 9, and the Science Department is known for our many academic extra-curricular opportunities, such as hosting lectures, workshops and taking our students to other schools and institutions to gain first-hand experience of aspects of science of interest to the students.
