At Rickmansworth School we aim:

  • to develop lively enquiring minds and the ability to question, argue rationally and think creatively
  • to acquire knowledge and skills relevant to adult life
  • to achieve understanding and respect for the uniqueness and beliefs of the individual
  • to maximise opportunities for scientific, mathematical, artistic, expressive, creative and technological experiences
  • to value scientific enquiry, participation, performance and the creativity of others
  • to acquire qualifications which maximise opportunities in employment and higher education

To achieve these aims we encourage a combination of creative and critical thought, scientific and mathematical enquiry, intellectual curiosity, participation and performance, and firm academic discipline – sustained hard work at School and at home.

Rickmansworth School, the fifth grammar school to be built after the war, was opened formally on 20th June 1956 by Countess Mountbatten of Burma, the first boys and girls having arrived in September 1953. The first all-ability intake was admitted in September 1969, and the School was maintained as a county School by Hertfordshire local education authority. In September 1990 the School gained grant-maintained status to become a self-governing School.

Today Rickmansworth is a Foundation School, providing education to boys and girls aged 11 to 18 of all academic abilities. Most children are admitted at 11 and there is an additional intake at 16 into the Sixth Form. In September 2003 the School was designated as a DfES Specialist Arts College, focusing on the Performing Arts and in April 2008 took on a second specialism of Science after recognition as a High Performing Specialist School. These awards allow the School to build on its academic, extra curricular and traditional strengths, broadening pupils’ experiences and opportunities. As a Foundation School Rickmansworth is self governing, and the Governing Body is responsible for the employment of staff, the admission of pupils and all aspects of the organisation and running of the School.

The School stands in 26 acres of attractive woodland situated in a green belt residential area well served by road and rail. The M25 motorway is five minutes distance by car, and Croxley Green and Rickmansworth Metropolitan Line stations are ten and fifteen minutes walks respectively. British Rail Watford Junction Station (out of Euston) is ten minutes by car.
