7th February 2019 | Head's Weekly Message |

Dear Parents and Carers

Parents Evenings

Congratulations to Year 11 Parents for the highest attendance this year (99%!). In this school, we would expect 95% or higher as we know how much interest you take in your son/daughter’s studies and how supportive you are to help us, help them be successful. I write to you this week, as Year 13 Parents Evening draws to a close, and once again I can see how purposeful and constructive the conversations have been between my staff and the students/parents.

Snow Closure

I am sorry to have had to close the School last week, but health and safety is of paramount importance and must be my first consideration. I would like to thank our Premises staff who were on site at 5.30am to recommend to me to make the decision to close. I am very grateful to them for also working at the weekend to clear the paths of snow and ice, so the site was safe by Monday morning. Unfortunately, the Rock Challenge event had to be postponed, but I am pleased to say a new date has been proposed for later in the year.

Year 11 Yorkshire PE trip

The Year 11 PE students have just returned from an exhausting 4-day trip to Yorkshire, where hopefully they have performed well and are pleased with the marks/grades they have been awarded for cycling and rock-climbing.

Literacy Week

Next week is Literacy Week at Ricky. This is a vital skill that permeates all subjects within the curriculum. The English faculty have a number of events planned to promote its importance as a life-skill; staff are publicising any book they are currently reading and we culminate the week with ‘5 words Friday’. Any support you can give at home to help enhance these reading, writing and speaking skills would be greatly appreciated.

Enrichment Day

On Tuesday next week, we have our second enrichment day, with activities as follows: Year 7 - MFL Factor; Year 8 - Maths/English; Year 9 - Which Way Now?; Year 10 and 11 – RS; Year 12 – Destinations Day; Year 13 – Well-Being. I would like to thank Mr Jones for coordinating all these events, and the staff who are leading/participating.

Year 9 Options Booklet

Our Options Booklet for students studying GCSEs during 2019-2021 will be available on our website next week. If you have a child in year 9, please make sure you download a copy of this useful reference booklet, which contains information on the option allocation process and our current GCSE subject choices, prior to our Year 9 Options Evening on 28 February.

Arriva Bus Service

Please see an updated letter attached regarding the Arriva bus service.

Year 7 Spelling Bee

The finals of the Year 7 Spelling Bee start next week. Well done to everyone so far!

This half-term is always rather long, especially as the days are still short, weather can be at its worst, and illness most prevalent. However on a positive note, the holidays are only one week away now. May I wish students and staff going on the ski trip next Friday the best of luck!

Yours sincerely

Mr P Thompson

Acting Headteacher
