Dear Parents and Carers

School Closure Notification System

Please could I draw your attention to the letter on the School website requesting new parents to the School to sign up to Everbridge for notification if the School is closed due to emergency or adverse weather conditions.

The Radiocentre Careers event at Global Academy

This week Year 10 students were fantastic ambassadors for Rickmansworth School, demonstrating all six Ricky R's. Students embraced the challenges set, engaged with all aspects of the day and finished with a well prepared presentation. The event was designed to get students thinking about a career in the creative industries and featured many large names in the industry including Global, Radioville, Mediacom and Heads Together. Five of our students won a day out at Capital Radio studios in Leicester Square for their relevant and focused group presentation, delivered following careful preparation. The winning team: Sophia Hanson, Max MacDonald, Livy McDonagh, Gus Voss Winwood and India Howe. Well done!

Sixth Form Open Evening – 5 December

School will open at 6.45pm for a 7pm start. There will be a talk from the Headteacher, the Director of Sixth Form and the Head Boy and Girl followed by the opportunity to visit five subject areas for more specific presentations. The evening will finish at 9.15pm.  We look forward to welcoming our current Year 11 students, parents and carers to the evening.   In light of the information below, please leave adequate time for your journey.

NATO Conference – 4 & 5 December

Due to the NATO Conference many roads surrounding The Grove will be closed or re-routed.  Parents/carers are asked to allow time to complete their journey and if necessary plan an alternative route.  During this time, we will use our judgement in extending registration where it is obvious a child’s journey has been impacted.

Kind donations from parents via our Foundation have been used to refurbish the old Sixth Form Common Room which is now a lovely new Learning Resource Centre.  If you feel you can help the School financially, please donate via http://www.rickmansworth.herts.sch.uk/userfiles/rickmansworth/School%20Foundation%20NEW%20Donor%20Form.pdf

Fundraising – Message from the PTA

The PTA have come up with a wonderful way for parents/carers, staff and governors to raise money for the School.  It is a shopping App used by many shops ie Amazon, eBay, Tesco, Asda, Waitrose, John Lewis, to name but a few.  It can be used in their shops and online.  Travel companies such as Tui, Easyjet holidays, Jet2holidays also participate.  In fact, there is a massive amount of companies involved.  All you need to do is download the App ‘Give as You Live’

https://www.giveasyoulive.com/refer/R9UoYAsxin5KlO7EYITyrQ7aiUq8Nw-3D-3D  and install the donation reminder.  (Choose Rickmansworth School PTA as your chosen charity.)  Once installed you continue shopping as usual – just remember to choose ‘Rickmansworth School PTA’ as your chosen charity.  These companies will give anything between 1% and 5% of your purchase price as a charitable donation to the School.  It is that simple.

The PTA have a target of raising £30,00 for an additional outside shelter which will benefit all the students.  So please download the App, help support the PTA which will provide our students with the additional shelter they require.  Thank you.

Eco Garden

The School is working towards achieving the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award which involve a 7 step framework: forming an Eco-Committee, carrying out an Environmental Review, creating an Action Plan, linking environmental work to the curriculum, informing and involving the School and wider community about progress made, monitoring and evaluating ecological changes to the School and finally producing an Eco-Code for the whole School.

At the moment we are currently setting up a committee with approximately 14 to 16 students as this has to be student led.   I will give you regular updates on the progress of this project

Life changing neurosurgery

An ex-student, Charlotte Hiller who was here from 2000 until 2007 and left to study for a Music Degree at Birmingham Conservatoire has now found herself in the difficult situation of needing to fund raise for life-changing neurosurgery that is unavailable to her on the NHS. The surgery will be performed by a consultant in Leeds who is currently the only person in the UK to offer it, but without the help of others she will be unable to move forward. She is living with numerous neurological issues, and has been told that she is of risk of a stroke or her skull fully dislocating from her neck if she moves the wrong way.

Would you like to help her fund her treatment ?

Click on the link below and make a donation – however small, every donation will help make a significant difference to Charlotte.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely

Mr M Fletcher, Headteacher
